Dear Pastor, Church, and All Supporters:
1 Peter 4:17 — For the time is come that judgment must begin at the house of God: and if it first begin at us, what shall the end be of them that obey not the gospel of God?
When GOD’S people get it right, the salt regains its savour and is worthy to be used again.
With the Tithes and Offerings taught from Scripture, and GOD’S Word correcting the wrongs, the students and pastors came to realise that they had been stealing GOD’S money for many years, and that the LORD withholds blessings from HIS people that would otherwise be given. They agreed amongst themselves that they would change where they had been wrong.
There is a tremendous amount of jealousy among tribal people, and this is found among the pastors as well. Old habits are hard to break, and unless one has a teachable spirit and a willingness to learn and change, those old habits do not simply fall away.
With the Scriptures bearing light to the fact that GOD’S money is to be used not just to support the pastor but also for mission work — which is the heartbeat of any real New Testament church — I make no apologies. I believe in this, teach it, and endorse it. There are many social programs in which churches are involved that have nothing to do with pure mission work.
This mission work has suffered for many years at the hands of those who made a business of the LORD’S money and churches.
With two Bible schools running simultaneously, spending time in translation work, studying and preparing outlines, making copies, and spending up to eight hours daily in class, I was spent at the end of each day — and my day did not stop there. I continued studying at home, and the school in Malawi was also starting class, eight hours ahead of PNG.
In the syllabus on Tithes and Offerings, it has come to light that many offerings were given “in theory only” to the LORD and HIS work, with the giver later laying claim to ownership again. What kind of offering is it when you say you have given to the LORD and then lay claim to it again?
I understand offerings taken up for a specific need and allocated accordingly. But I have a question for all: when you surrender that offering to the LORD — no matter the capacity — is that offering still yours, partly yours, or no longer yours at all? When we have that answer, we will know how to respond and behave towards that offering.
Where in Scripture do we find a resending, withdrawal, or retraction of an offering? Once the offering has been released from your hand to the LORD’S house, or work, or servant, that offering is no longer yours.
In His Name,
Missionary Peter A. Halliman
